Industrial Tourism

The first mass timber building in the North Woods proposes a cultural destination within a Wood Innovation Center. The shores of Lake Superior are home to Industrial Tourism destinations like the Ore Docks and Aerial Lift Bridge. The Wood Innovation Center gives the industrial language of Duluth new life. The building is a series of CLT boxes, activated and altered by two, giant lifts. These lifts set the cadence of the building, connect program, and provide a dynamic connection between Superior St and Lake Walk Park.

PROJECT LOCATION: 112 E Superior St, Duluth, MN 55802

This project was designed entirely out mass timber elements like CLT panels and Glulam beams. Detail concepts were developed to protect exposed timber elements. The lift structure and stacks of program were designed to be self supporting, showcasing the wood construction.
